Last year, Donald Trump signed an executive order that would allow him to implement tariffs on goods imported to the United States. He claimed the move would “make America wealthy again” but the news triggered a slump in the global stock market, with US markets having their worst day since COVID (via the BBC).

Video games experts warned the tariffs would seriously harm the sector, and Xbox and PlayStation users have all had to pay more for consoles and accessories since they were implemented. Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 were also delayed due to the tariffs.

In February, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had overstepped his boundaries with the tariffs and earlier this month, it was reported that the US government could have to pay back the $130billion it collected last year. In response, Trump has threatened new 15 per cent tariffs on foreign goods will go live later this week.

More than 1000 companies have now taken legal action against the US government over the tariffs, including Nintendo. “This action concerns Defendants’ initiation and administration of unlawful trade measures that have, to date, resulted in the collection of more than $200 billion in tariffs on imports from nearly all countries,” wrote lawyers. “All tariffs collected must be refunded with interest.”

A Nintendo spokesperson confirmed to Aftermath that it had filed the lawsuit but had “nothing else to share on this topic.”

Last week, The Pokemon Company hit out at Donald Trump’s White House after they shared a “Make America Great Again” meme that used the artwork of recently-released Pokopia game.

“We are aware of recent social content that includes imagery associated with our brand,” spokesperson Sravanthi Dev said in a statement. “We were not involved in its creation or distribution, and no permission was granted for the use of our intellectual property. Our mission is to bring the world together, and that mission is not affiliated with any political viewpoint or agenda.”

In other news, Sony has been accused of launching dynamic pricing for hit PlayStation games including The Last Of UsGod Of War and more.
