Eric Dane, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53.
The actor’s death comes less than a year after he shared that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” Dane’s family wrote in a statement.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world.”
The message continued: “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”
It concluded: “The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane played Dr Mark Sloan, aka ‘Dr McSteamy’, on the US medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. He also portrayed Cal Jacobs in HBO‘s Euphoria.
Following his ALS diagnosis, Dane spent recent months raising awareness of the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND). Late last year, he played a firefighter with ALS on the NBC medical series Brilliant Minds, marking his final role.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson said (via BBC News): “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend. “Working with him was an honour. Being his friend was a gift.”
ALS is a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disorder that results in the progressive loss of both upper and lower motor functions and muscles. It is currently incurable and progressively worsens over time.
Speaking about his condition last spring, Dane said: “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
Born in San Francisco, California, Dane landed roles in Saved By The Bell, The Wonder Years, Married… with Children and Roseanne in his early career. He later appeared in two seasons of Charmed.
The actor’s first film role was in 2000’s The Basket. Dane’s other big-screen appearances include Marley & Me, X-Men: The Last Stand, Redeeming Love, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die and Borderline.
Season three of Euphoria is set to premiere on April 12 on HBO Max. It’ll mark Dane’s third turn as Cal Jacobs, father to Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs.
