The Game Awards took place last night (December 11) with a number of blockbuster titles confirmed during the ceremony – check out all the big announcements below:
Ahead of the two-hour ceremony, it was reported that a 60-second trailer at The Game Awards cost up to $450,000. However, that didn’t stop developers from making a number of massive announcements.
In the days leading up to the event, gaming fans were speculating about a mysterious statue that had appeared in the Californian desert. Early rumours about Diablo 4 and God Of War were quickly debunked, with the teams behind Lords Of The Fallen 2 and The Elder Scrolls 6 also denying their involvement in the stunt.
Baldur’s Gate 3 creators Larian Studios hit back at rumours it was hyping up Divinity: Original Sin 3 after some legal documents were unearthed that appeared to tie the two projects together but last night, the studio confirmed their new role-playing game Divinity.
“While Divinity is a brand new game that doesn’t require experience with previous Larian titles, those who’ve played Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be able to enjoy greater understanding and continuity,” explains a press release.
“Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled Divinity. We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place,” added Larian CEO Swen Vincke. “This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.” There’s no release date yet but you can check out a trailer below.
The future of Tomb Raider was also unveiled, with two games in the works. Next year, fans can play a remastered take of the original Lara Croft adventure, Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, ahead of brand new adventure Tomb Raider: Catalyst which is due to launch in 2027.
Both games will feature acclaimed actress Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft. “With Tomb Raider: Catalyst, we’re crafting our most expansive and innovative Tomb Raider adventure yet, while Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis allows us to revisit where it all began through a modern lens,” said Crystal Dynamics boss Scot Amos.
Two new Star Wars games were also announced. Narrative-driven, single-player RPG Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic is the spiritual successor to Knights Of The Old Republic but will feature a new cast of characters. The game is currently in the early stages of development, with work led by Casey Hudson (BioWare, Knights Of The Old Republic).
“Players step into the role of a Force user in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic will blend innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat for an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens the player’s journey toward light or darkness,” reads an official description.
While we might be waiting a little while for Fate Of The Old Republic, Star Wars Galactic Racer is set to launch next year.
“For us, Star Wars has always represented the power of wonder – and racing is one of its most thrilling expressions,” said Matt Webster, CEO of developers Fuse Games. “With Star Wars: Galactic Racer, we wanted to reinvent what a racing game can be: adventurous, spectacular and exhilarating. We want every race to feel alive with dynamic risk-reward choices, and every victory to feel incredible.”
Elsewhere during the ceremony, it was finally confirmed that Resident Evil icon Leon is set to appear in next year’s Requiem, Dungeons & Dragons announced new video game Warlock, a third-person action-adventure game built around “immersive, expressive magic where you use spellcraft to solve challenges and take down monsters” and the next instalment of the beloved Control series Resonant is due to come next year.
It was also revealed that Lenny Kravitz will star as James Bond baddie Bawma, The Pirate King in upcoming game 007: First Light.
“The Bond franchise has such an incredible legacy in video games, so to step into it with a brand-new character like Bawma is amazing,” said Kravitz. “He’s magnetic and unpredictable, there’s danger in him, but also heart and purpose. He’s not just a man with power; he is a man who has to fight for every inch of it. Bringing that energy into 007’s world felt incredible.”
In other news, buzzy rock sensation Bilmuri has shared a cover of Cyberpunk 2077 anthem ‘I Really Want To Stay At Your House’.
