sleepy soph – ‘lucky’ EP

Boorloo/Perth singer-songwriter sleepy soph captivates on her debut EP, lucky — unveiling a warming, introspective blend of indie folk and alt-pop. Built on delicate guitars, airy vocals, and intimate bedroom-recording warmth, the EP captures the shifting emotions of early adulthood — new love, changing friendships, and the small, defining moments of growing up — with gentle clarity and heartfelt ease.

Opening the EP, “leave it” weaves soft acoustic strums and lyrical depictions of misplaced hope, capturing the slide from “I wanted a chance to feel right” to the resignation of a feeling that “is dragging me down.” The metaphor of a “bridge” — representing the uncertain paths and conflicting directions within “wanting you around” — stirs especially well, highlighting a state between holding on and finally letting go. The ensuing “last chips in the packet” is another delight, expanding from the introduction’s more subdued folk into a layered, dreamy alt-pop feeling; the hypnotic acoustics and bouncy drums build into twangy electric guitars with seamless immersion.

“aquarius song” then arrives with a lush folk captivation, especially striking in vocal work that expands from laid-back introspections to more soaring melodics. The infusion of piano makes for a lovely, spine-tingling addition — combining with touches of wordless vocals for a blissfully enjoyable build and thematic celebration of individuality.

Another stylistic realm entirely shows on “jazz boy,” where smooth saxophone and swaying guitars complement smitten vocal accounts of a blooming relationship; its late-night, soulful pop aesthetic is intoxicating. EP finale “lesson learned” excels as well. Soft acoustics maneuver into slide guitar charm, while the vocal perspectives of friendship — “they’re always there to help me cope” — exist within the larger context of navigating early adulthood. lucky is a fantastic showcase in songwriting from sleepy soph.
