Stranger Things co-creators The Duffer Brothers have opened up about the shocking end to part one of the final season.

The first four episodes of season five were released Wednesday (November 26), concluding with Chapter Four: Sorcerer. At the close of the episode, it is revealed that Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) has psychic powers similar to that of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), killing the Demogorgons attacking his friends.

The reveal was a shock, as previously Will didn’t display any powers other than a connection to the hivemind of villain Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), but Ross and Matt Duffer spoke to Variety to clarify how the twist came about.

When asked whether Will has the same powers as Eleven, Ross Duffer replied: “It’s different in that he’s able to channel Vecna’s powers. But they’re all related. Vecna and Eleven, their powers are similar. The powers aren’t within him. He’s able to channel these powers from Vecna and use it, sort of puppeteering.”

Matt added: “He taps into the hivemind, and then he can manipulate anything within the hive. You’ll see how far he can take it as you continue to watch. But that’s how he’s able to manipulate the monster. So he can’t open a door, because the door is not part of the hive mind… It’s proximity based.”

He then emphasised that had Will never been taken to The Upside Down in season one and connected with Vecna, he wouldn’t have gained these abilities. “So it’s very different from Eleven in that regard.”

NME’s Nick Levine gave the opening episodes four stars in his review. “Perhaps inevitably, volume one feels a lot like an appetiser for the rest of the season,” he explained. “But even in piecemeal form, Stranger Things has a flair for epic and emotionally resonant storytelling. After all those years, this smart, big-hearted sci-fi show still has the power to turn your head upside down.”

This week, Millie Bobby Brown played down rumours of a rift with co-star David Harbour, who plays her adoptive father on the show.
