You know if this had’ve been December rather than July I’d have sworn ‘Promises’ was a Christmas song. It just has that warmth, that generosity of spirit even if what lurks deep in the narrative belies that take. Charles James and The Rise however are capable of producing a well of embrace in their sound, an old time production with wispy guitars, soft vocal entanglement and the summoning of a dreamy effect at will. The brass kicks in and suddenly the floodgates opened on our obdurate tear ducts. Lord Huron has some serious competition on his hands from Donegal’s finest. KH
