The debut single from WhoDaresWins, “Hero” infuses spaghetti-western intrigue and anthemic rock vigor. The project comprises longtime friends John Haddrell and Will Jack, who wrote the track with his son in mind. “He’s been a constant in my life,” Will Jack says. “He’s stood by me through thick and thin. He’s my brother and my best friend … my hero!” His son, Willie, features on the track with his excellent guitar work; he previously played with Dr Zee & WILLJACK and Tom Tikka, who also guests on the track. They previously combined forces on the track “Overnight Sensation,” which hit #3 on the Canadian Rock Chart.
Accompanying the impactful rock production is a cinematic music video, filmed in western-inspired theme park Mini Hollywood in Almeria, Spain. Fast-paced gunfights and a foreboding sheriff star across the dusty, nostalgic western sights. The track’s opening stirs in its “heroes sometimes fall” acknowledgements — rousing alongside click-clacking percussion and twangy guitars, as the “hey! hey!” vocal exultation takes hold thereafter.
“I’m gonna give you everything that you ever need,” a particularly ardent vocal sequence enamors, punctuated by dreamier guitar adornments before the “be my hero, when the darkness breeds despair” introspection. The track’s range of expressive, magnetic vocals, rousing rock theatrics, and spaghetti-western influence — both aesthetically and in its riveting music video — make for a resonating standout of a debut from WhoDaresWins.
