Netflix first spoke about a live-action adaptation of hit video game series Assassin’s Creed back in 2020 and yesterday (July 17) they confirmed the project had finally been greenlit.

Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” reads the official description from Netflix. “The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

The Assassin’s Creed adaptation will be created by Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener, who was behind the second season of the disastrous Paramount + Halo adaptation.

Despite positive reviews, many Halo fans took issue with the show because it strayed so far away from the source material. It didn’t help that season one showrunner admitted the team “didn’t look at the game [or] talk about the game”, instead focusing on the characters and the wider world of Halo for their adaptation. It was eventually cancelled after just two seasons.

Now Assassin’s Creed fans are worried the Netflix adaptation will suffer a similar fate.
