Arsenal has had a lot of success in the transfer market in recent seasons, with the club breaking the British transfer record when they signed Declan Rice from West Ham. A vital component that orchestrated this transfer was Edu Gaspar, who joined the club in 2019 as its first ever sporting director.
In his time at Arsenal, Edu has foreseen a lot of transfer negotiations in and out of the club, with his latest acquisitions involving converting David Raya’s loan deal from Brentford to become permanent, bolstering the already bloated left back berth with Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori, adding some much needed steel in midfield from Real Sociedad in the form of Mikel Merino, and on transfer deadline day, a cheeky loan deal with rivals, Chelsea, for Raheem Sterling.
However, it looks like Edu Gaspar’s time with Arsenal is coming to an end after Sky Sports reported that he’s set to leave the club. The timeline of his exit is not known as at the time this article is published and there hasn’t been any official communication from Arsenal as well. All we know for now is that Edu Gaspar has been shortlisted as a prime candidate to become a Director of Football at Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs – this includes Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave. The wealthy businessman is also looking to buy a fourth club in Europe as well.
It’s unclear why Edu has made the decision to leave Arsenal, but it has been established in the past that he has a good relationship with Mr. Marinakis.
Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar forged a great relationship at Arsenal, when the Spaniard took over from his compatriot Unai Emery in December 2019. Arteta and Edu worked together to bring in some major recruits to the club, with the top five being Declan Rice (£105m), Kai Havertz (£65m), Ben White (£50m), Thomas Partey (£45m) and Gabriel Jesus (£45m).
Arteta’s success on the pitch at Arsenal has been one FA Cup trophy and two FA Community Shields but in the past two seasons, Arsenal has come very close to achieve its long dream of a Premier League title, which has eluded the club for more than 20 years.
Edu leaving is a very big blow, but soldiers come and go but the barracks remain the same.
We’ve seen the likes of Ivan Gazidis, Raul Sanllehi, now Edu. On to the next one, I guess.
